Zero to Dream Job in 90 Days!

Day#25 Job Ponderings

Tonight I’m thinking that it’s hard to wait. It’s hard to be patient, to accept what is right now and know that you are doing everything to meet your goal, which for me is finding my dream job. I have some irons in the fire, conversations happening with people, applications out and have signed up for webinars. Each morning I get up and say “today will be the day I will do my best to be the best person I can be, push positive vibes out into the world, read something inspirational and get closer to finding that job.”

Tonight I have decided to list all the jobs I have ever had. This process may uncover something, may show a pattern, I am not sure! I will then pick my top three and give the reasons why they are my favorites.

Here goes!

Babysitter

Special needs summer camp counselor

Playground instructor

Friendly’s waitress

Cashier

Cocktail waitress

Child care provider

Nanny

College Library desk clerk

Ice Cream Truck driver

Newspaper deliverer

Assistant Editor/correspondent

Native American Nation teacher

Homeless shelter teacher

Early childhood consultant

My top three and why:

1. Assistant Editor/correspondent

  • I loved these two positions, as I learned so much about putting a publication together, researched, interviewed and wrote stories about people getting a hand up at Habitat for Humanity. Answering letters to President Carter from people needing help, encouragement or sometimes just because they were lonely, was fulfilling. The atmosphere at the organization was uplifting and I knew every day I was working in an international organization to spread news about the good being done all over the world.

2. Resource Center/lending library

  • This position was multi-faceted, fun and interesting. I had a flexible schedule, got to converse with parents, play with children, work with teachers, run a scholarship program and promote high quality early childhood education.

3. National Project Coordinator

  • This position was also multi-faceted and never boring. I coordinated all segments of a national project including a research team, board meetings, Federal Head Start officers, materials development, focus groups, diversity and inclusion, as well as parent participation. It was great to be part of a project from beginning to end and see it completed and materials disseminated nationwide.

Writing down what I have done for work and the skills used in those top three positions, has helped me think about transferable skills, cover letters and contemplate what current positions might fit these past missions of mine. What job do I want to add to this list? It’s helpful to know what sparks us, so that we can find a job where we can feel that spark daily!

Hope you find some value in trying this exercise. Perseverance can crack the toughest nut! (Or biggest rock!)
