Zero to Dream Job in 90 Days!

Day #36 Checking in with reality!

I’ve decided to check in with myself on the blog, after passing the “1/3 of the way there” mark. I want to write about what I have learned, what I still need to learn and what the heck am I doing?

I have learned that it’s a very real challenge to write every day and that some days are easier than others. I can and do write the blog each day and I’m proud that I am sticking to that plan. Writing each day is very good practice and a solid routine to hold oneself to.

I have also learned that quite a few people enjoy my stories and look forward to them each day. This is probably the most surprising element, to me, to know this! Some people have suggested I make the blog, or parts of it, into a book. I don’t know if this will happen, but it’s nice to contemplate it!

I have also learned that writing this blog doesn’t guarantee a job for me. It can, however, work as a catalyst to spur me on to new ideas and move my creativity in different directions. Also, when I am speaking with a potential employer, it’s nice to be able to tell them “I’m currently writing this blog” and it can serve as a talking point that opens up the conversation to my skills and experiences.

I still need to learn how to market myself in a way that is unique. I need to know how to sell myself with the transferable skills I have and speak about them with confidence. I also need to use my contacts to reach out to people who might be able to help.

My friend helped me do just that last week. She reached out to a friend of hers, that works in a line of work that has writing needs. She gave me sound advice, encouraged me to use all contacts and explained that the people that get hired are often the ones who are brought forward by someone who knows them. That one sentence helped me to know that it’s not only okay to ask others for help, but it’s mandatory to make yourself as visible as possible.

This week, I am concentrating on this aspect of my job search. Networking with others is a possible door opening, each time you knock. I’m going to ring the buzzer, send the emails, speak my passion, and with a dash of magic and a spark of fire, who knows what can happen?
